New residence requirements impact international students

Recently enacted changes to the residency requirements for Citizenship Applications have added extra hurdles and time for international students and young professionals seeking Canadian citizenship, says Toronto litigation lawyer Reshma Kishnani.

Reforms to the federal Citizenship Act, including those which came into force in June 2015, include new residency requirements, expanded age requirements for language and knowledge testing, strengthened penalties for fraud, and prohibitions for foreign criminality and activities against national interests.
